SUMMARY:The Power Of Collaboration: Collective Making
DESCRIPTION:Paul Robeson Galleries\, Project for Empty Space and the Newark Artist Database present a two part presentation on The Power of Collaboration with Newark based artist group LAND Collective. During Part 2: Collective Making\, LAND Collective will discuss harnessing the power of what each artist brings to the collective and the value it brings to what they develop together. This session focuses on the group’s book project LAND as a primary example of such work. RSVP required. Zoom details sent via email confirmation. \nFor its first publication\, LAND Collective joins together to address the central questions: what is our relationship to space and how do we define power? Rooted in Newark\, the artists and storytellers\, engage in a critical practice that requires self-reflection of their own respective positions and relations to the city\, as well as a deep engagement with community and space\, in order to offer insights to how we understand\, see\, and impact the land in which we occupy. The reflections and stories come from a range of diverse voices and perspectives to explore ownership\, power\, and privilege in our current moment and offer a lens as to how to be more aware of such. Ultimately\, through this publication\, we hope to encourage the reader to reflect on the central question themselves. More topics covered include: Migration\, Protest\, Water\, and Gentrification.

SUMMARY:Murals: A Socially Engaged Process
DESCRIPTION:During this conversation Newark based artist Layqa Nuna Yawar will discuss how he sees murals as a socially engaged process as well as the inspiration for his mural series The Robeson Paean\, a series commemorating the life and legacy of artist-activist Paul Robeson.\n \nRSVP required. Zoom details will be sent via email 24 hours before the program. \nRSVP here | https://bit.ly/3ceMFO4 \nLayqa Nuna Yawar was born in Cuenca\, Ecuador and lives in Newark\, New Jersey. His work examines the power that public and representational art have in challenging injustice\, racism and xenophobia. This form of collective artmaking is part of a liberation struggle that helps celebrate and publicly reclaim diasporic narratives as well as imagine a better and brighter future. Layqa received a B.F.A. from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and his art can be found on walls\, museums and galleries across the world. He has curated and produced mural projects with various city administrations\, art programs and private organizations in the USA and abroad.

SUMMARY:Prg Artist In Residence Khari Johnson-Ricks In Conversation With Dj Tah
DESCRIPTION:During this conversation/listening session PRG’s 5th Artist in Residence\, visual artist and DJ Khari Johnson-Ricks  will speak with New Jersey based DJ TAH. Throughout the duration of his residency\, Khari will use his studio as a living archive to preserve the history of Jersey club and Jersey club dancing; a local vernacular tradition that is 20 years old and has been a creative framework for many young Black musician and artists. Over the years\, venues that were the hubs for Jersey club culture in Newark have been shuttered and Khari’s hope is to revitalize and honor this creative subculture by inviting a host of jersey club producers\, dancers\, and community members to the studio to map the progression of dances over time and talk to people about their experience with the art form. By collecting their stories\, he would preserve the trajectory of the subculture and its correlation to Newark’s shifting arts landscape\, connecting this local tradition to a lineage of Black radical art movements such as Hip-Hop and House Music.\nRSVP required. Zoom details will be sent via email 24 hours before the program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKhari Johnson-Ricks is an artist and DJ whose work spans a range of audiovisual media and often exist in the public eye. This includes the production of zines\, works on paper\, performances\, murals\, and nightlife spaces. Through these media he explores the ways that vernacular ritual practice becomes tradition and how the body carries history through movement. By editing\, rediscovering\, juxtaposing the movement traditions of Shotokan Karate\, Jersey Club\, weightlifting and various other sports he highlights the social importance of movement as a non-verbal communication method as well as a community building and mental health tool. Khari holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Montclair State University (2016) and a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College\, City University of New York (2019). \nTAH is a 26 year old DJ\, producer\, sound designer and engineer who has released records on Like That Records\, Thread\, and Knightwerk Records. Some notable groups he has worked with are the Black owned Halfmoon BK Radio\, Boiler Room\, and MoMA PS1.

SUMMARY:Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, is a conversation between Dr. Nicole R. Fleetwood\, author and curator of MoMA PS1’s exhibition Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, and formerly incarcerated artist\, Ojore Lutalo. During this discussion\, Ojore will discuss his experience making art in solitary confinement\, working with Dr. Nicole on the exhibition and the work he does with American Friends of Service Committee. \nThis program is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Voices from Outside: Critical Resistance on view at the CJ Gallery\, located on the 5th floor of Rutgers University – Newark’s Criminal Justice Building. \nRSVP here! \nhttp://bit.ly/2PslaqX \nDr. Nicole R. Fleetwood is Professor of American Studies and Art History at Rutgers University- New Brunswick. She is a writer\, curator\, and art critic whose interests are contemporary black diasporic art and visual culture\, photography studies\, art and public practice\, performance studies\, gender and feminist studies\, black cultural history\, creative nonfiction\, prison abolition and carceral studies\, and poverty studies. She is the author of three books: Marking Time: Art in the Era of Mass Incarceration (Harvard University Press\, 2020)\, On Racial Icons: Blackness and the Public Imagination (Rutgers University Press\, 2015)\, and Troubling Vision: Performance\, Visuality\, and Blackness\, which was the recipient of the 2012 Lora Romero First Book Publication Prize of the American Studies Association. Her articles appear in African American Review\, American Quarterly\, Aperture\, Callaloo: Art and Culture in the African Diaspora\, The Conversation\, LitHub\, Public Books\, Public Culture\, Signs\, Social Text\, art catalogues\, and edited anthologies. Fleetwood received her Ph.D. from Stanford University in the Program in Modern Thought and Literature and her B.Phil. from the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Miami University (Ohio). Her upcoming exhibition\, Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, will be on view at MoMA PS1 from April 5\, 2020 – August 23\, 2020. \nThe artist Ojore Lutalo was released from Trenton State Penitentiary August 26th\, 2009 by way of a court order. He maxed out after 28 years\, 22 of which were spent in the Management Control Unit (Solitary Confinement). In order to keep his sanity during his internment\, Ojore abided by a strict regiment of physical exercise\, mediation and study. Over the years Ojore was asked repeatedly to describe the conditions that he faced on a daily basis. These requests ranged from simple curiosity as to the physical particulars of his cell and surroundings to the profound emotional pressures and struggles associated with long term solitary confinement. Ojore began creating his political propaganda both as a way to maintain his sanity and to more adequately convey to his friends the physical and emotional reality he experienced within solitary confinement. For the last 22 years of his confinement Ojore created a wide range of art pieces offering his unique perspective. Since his release is 2008\, Ojore dedicates himself to assisting the American Friends Service Committee in its attempt to expose the true nature and extent of long term isolation\, its effect both on the prisoner individually as well as society at large. This outreach often involves speaking engagements in which he uses artwork to re-enforce his text\, finding visuals often communicate more effectively than a purely oral presentation.

The colorful t-shirt material and denim squares represent sexual violence and intimate partner violence in various forms. This quilt is upheld\, both literally and figuratively\, by stitches of strength. \nTaylor Miller will discuss the curatorial process and provide prevention information. Fury\, likewise\, will discuss practical ways to engage these ideas and the people it affects. \nThe conversation will be followed by a pop-up shop curated by Fury\, in Room 312/ Workshop 2.

SUMMARY:Now Open: "Exquisite Corpse"
DESCRIPTION:The Exquisite Corpse (“Cadavre Exquis”) was a favorite Surrealist game from the 1920s onwards. The game involves multiple participants contributing to a single drawing. Traditionally\, participants create their section of the drawing and then cover it so the next person is ‘drawing blind.’ Once all participants have finished\, the drawing is unfolded and revealed. \nIn 2010\, we commissioned 92 artists of the region to produce 30 drawings\, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Paul Robeson Galleries. In the spirit of Paul Robeson\, we sought to promote free speech and creative expression\, reflecting a multitude of voices through our exhibitions\, programs\, and publications. The anniversary exhibition manifested Paul Robeson Galleries’ mission of inclusivity\, participation\, and community outreach\, and we are pleased to present a selection of the works. \nArtists: Perry Angelora\, Nakeya B\, Nina Lola Bacchuber\, Suzanne Kammin Baron\, Alaine Becker\, Lauren Simkin Berke\, Pat Brentano\, Michele Brody\, Karen Brummund\, Emanuele James Cacciatore\, Rodriguez Calero\, Robert Carioscia\, Megan Cedro\, Nancy Cohen\, Yvette Cohen\, Copie\, Laura Cuevas\, Patricia Dahlman\, Agnes DeBethune\, Paul Di Zefalo\, Molly Dilworth\, Marisa Dipaola\, Asya Dodina\, Nisha Drinkard\, Jordan Eagles\, Eileen Ferera\, David Rios Ferreira\, Sean Patrick Gallagher\, Jerry Gant\, Florencio Gelabert\, Irene Gennaro\, Beth Gilfilen\, Bonnie Gloris\, Dan Gluibizzi\, Jr\, Michelle Orsi Gordon\, Matt Louis Gosser\, Jaz Graf\, James Horner\, Jenny Kanzler\, Jen Keshka\, Ana Garces Kiley\, Sol Kjok\, Nick Kline\, Nadine LaFond\, Yen-Hua Lee\, Greg Leshe\, I-Ling Eleen Lin\, So Yoon Lym\, Mary Kate Maher\, China Marks\, Caitlin Masley\, Caroline Anne McAuliffe\, Anne Queeny McKeown\, Terina Nicole McKinney\, Darren McManus\, Meridith McNeal\, Lucia Warck Meister\, Emmy Mikelson\, Hannah Joanne Mishin\, Jason Mones\, Narciso Montero\, Brian Oakes\, Amy Ortiz\, Roberto Osti\, Courtnay Papy\, John A. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "The Shadows of Houses"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the reception of “The Shadows of Houses” on March 15th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “The Shadows of Houses” is a three-person show featuring black and white photographs from Terry Boddie\, Shakia Lewis\, and Cesar Melgar. The title of exhibition is taken from Newark native Amiri Baraka’s poem “Legacy\,” a mediation on history and home. Melgar’s street photography cast a sharp eye on the inhabitants and city of Newark. Selections from Lewis’ series\, “The Value of Hope\,” focus on the small details of the subjects lives in an attempt to transform over-determined narratives of homelessness. Boddie’s pictures capture fleeting moments of intimacy between people and their environments.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Mirror Mirror"
DESCRIPTION:Paul Robeson Galleries at Express Newark is pleased to present\, Mirror Mirror\, an exhibition and publication featuring contemporary artists whose work could be classified as portraiture (in the broadest sense of the word). A portrait is most commonly recognized as a likeness of the face\, or upper part of the human form. \nParticipating artists: Manuel Acevedo\, Zoë Charlton\, Paolo Cirio\, David Antonio Cruz\, Kevin Darmanie\, E.V. Day\, Leah DeVun\, Nona Faustine\, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh\, Anne-Karin Furunes\, Phyllis Galembo\, Chitra Ganesh\, William Kentridge\, Riva Lehrer\, Ani Liu\, Jessamyn Lovell\, Hyphen-Labs\, Peggie Miller\, Anna Ogier-Bloomer\, Polixeni Papapetrou\, Patricia Piccinini\, Wendy Red Star\, Faith Ringgold\, Kevin Blythe Sampson\, María Verónica San Martín\, Leo Selvaggio\, Laura Splan\, Dread Scott\, Beat Streuli\, Arne Svenson\, Shoshanna Weinberger\, Deborah Willis\, Martha Wilson \nThe artworks challenge dominant paradigms about such things as gender\, race\, age\, societal norms\, technology\, and beauty. The emphasis on the exhibition is on provoking curiosity and discussion rather than providing a definitive definition of what constitutes a ‘portrait’. The diverse array of artists in have approached the subject of portraiture in a multitude of ways. Some have chosen to work with traditional\, realistic representations of the human face\, while others have used unconventional materials to create abstract references. Artists have looked to the past for inspiration – questioning who have created portraits and what agendas have been served through the process. Artists have looked to their immediate environment – friends family and strangers – to reexamine their world\, critiquing implicit assumptions and biases. Other visionary artists look forwards to create images of aspirational and inspirational potential future worlds.
