SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Seeking Asylum Resisting Detention\, NJ: States of Incarceration Newark"
DESCRIPTION:Project for Empty Space in collaboration with the Humanities Action Lab\, Newest Americans\, Rutgers University-Newark’s Graduate Program in Americans Studies\, and First Friends of NJ and NY presents States of Incarceration: Seeking Asylum\, Resisting Detention. This event includes the Newark premiere of the States of Incarceration exhibit in addition to three other components that examine the impact of immigrant detention in the Newark region. \nDr. Mary Rizzo and graduate student Dahlia Azran\, working with First Friends\, curated a collection of art created by detainees while in detention in North Jersey. Many of these pieces are composed of non-traditional materials such as candy wrappers\, toilet paper\, food-based ink\, and other scraps of utilitarian objects. In many cases\, discarded paraphernalia were some of the only materials available to detainees to use in creative endeavors. This portion of the exhibition demonstrates how detainees use art to resist the dehumanization of imprisonment\, seek refuge and find solace\, and express gratitude to the listeners who hear their stories. \nNewest Americans produced eight photographic portraits by founding partner Ed Kashi of people who were detained between 1996 and the present\, and conducted interviews with the subjects about their experience in detention and their lives since they were released. Kashi’s life-size portraits feature former detainees who firmly stand their ground even while their physical settings seem to be receding them\, as though they are there and not there\, at home and adrift\, uncertain of their place in America. These portraits are accompanied by recorded accounts from the detainees\, who phone visitors back when texted via cellphone. \nFinally\, another collection of artwork\, curated by Project for Empty Space’s Jasmine Wahi and Rebecca Pauline Jampol\, is comprised of pieces by four artists: Lizania Cruz\, Samer Fouad\, Jon Gomez\, and Ann J. Lewis (GILF). Each artists links the precariousness of people with an undocumented status in the United States to the larger threat of the carceral state.

SUMMARY:"1+1=3" / Express Newark Brand Identity Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In March 2017 the Design Consortium was invited to participate in the Express Newark Grand Opening. For this exciting event we created a collaborative workshop for Opening participants that introduced visitors to the DC’s process and methodology\, and a small exhibition of the Express Newark Brand Identity design process. \nFollowing a quick presentation of our methodology\, we explained the “1+1=3” concept behind Express Newark (where 1+1 represent RU-N + the community)\, and made use of this notion to ask visitors what could “3” mean to them? \nIn the workshop\, we took visitors through a participatory design project. Participants filled out a Postcard indicating what “3” is for them\, and selecting the elements of the EN Brand Language which they wanted used for the visual expression of their message. \nVisitor’s responses to the exhibition’s prompts were then visually interpreted by DC design students Sarah Barcelos\, Anne Rochelle Bernal\, Andrea Cassar\, Tinhinane Khelifi\, Marsha Shnayder\, and Yosmany Michaca Vivar\, and showcased on the EN Instagram feed. During the Opening\, two large screens in the EN Lecture Hall displayed the Instagram feed as new Posters were being created and added in real time. \nThis workshop allowed us to gather input from community members that could inform ways in which Express Newark can engage with the community\, beyond the DC’s regular operations.

SUMMARY:Picturing Black Girlhood: Moments of Possibility
DESCRIPTION:Picturing Black Girlhood: Moments of Possibility\, is an exhibition exploring the concept of Black girlhood through the work of more than 85 Black women\, girls\, and genderqueer artists working in photography and film. On view from February 17 through July 2\, 2022\, at Express Newark in downtown Newark\, Picturing Black Girlhood is co-curated by photographers and activists Scheherazade Tillet and Zoraida Lopez-Diago. \nBringing together iconic image-makers\, emerging artists\, and young photographers (the artists range in age from 8 to 94\, and over half of them are under the age of 18)\, Picturing Black Girlhood restages intimate Black girl coming-of-age narratives made through the reifying the lens of Black women and genderqueer artists and the real-time experiences and perspectives of Black girls themselves. \nPicturing Black Girlhood: Moments of Possibility is organized by Scheherazade Tillet\, a photographer\, art therapist\, and the executive director of A Long Walk Home\, a non-profit that empowers young people to use art to end violence against girls and women. Zoraida Lopez-Diago\, a photographer\, an environmental justice activist at Scenic Hudson Inc. and as the co-creator of Women Picturing Revolution\, the co-editor of the book\, “Black Matrilineage\, Photography and Representation: Another Way of Knowing.  \nAlliyah Allen is the assistant curator.
